Dionaea muscipula Care Guide

Light Requirements

  • High Light: Thrives in bright environments. Provide ample sunlight for optimal growth.
  • Summer Care: Provide partial shade during intense summer afternoons to prevent scorching.

Temperature

  • Optimal Growth: 18°C - 28°C
  • Survival Range: 0°C - 40°C

Humidity

  • Ideal Range: Maintain air humidity between 50% - 60%.

Soil & Substrate

  • Recommendation: Use Pure Moss.
  • Note: Slightly acidic substrates are essential for the healthy growth of carnivorous plants. Avoid standard potting soil.

Watering

  • Water Quality: Use water with TDS < 100 ppm. Rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis (RO) water is highly recommended. Do not use tap water containing high salts or calcium.
  • Method: Water thoroughly when the surface feels slightly dry.
  • Drainage: Ensure good drainage; do not use the "tray method" (keeping standing water in the saucer) for extended periods to prevent root rot.

Fertilization

  • Method: Foliar feeding (spraying leaves).
  • Dosage: Dilute liquid fertilizer to at least 2000x strength.
  • Frequency: Apply once a week.

 Propagation

  • Method: Leaf Pullings.
  • Process: Gently remove a healthy leaf close to the base (ensure the white base is intact).
  • Setup: Place on moist sphagnum moss and cover (e.g., in a disposable container) to maintain high humidity (greenhouse effect) until new growth appears.

Important Notes

  • Air Circulation: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal diseases and mold.
  • Dormancy: The Venus Flytrap goes dormant in winter. Growth will slow or stop; reduce watering frequency during this period.
