Pinguicula Care Guide

Temperature

  • Ideal Range: 18°C-28°C.
  • Summer Care: Keep below 40°C; provide shade and ventilation to prevent heat stress.
  •  Winter Care: Most species tolerate light frosts. They enter dormancy when temperatures drop below 15°C.

Lighting

  • Light Intensity: 5,000 - 8,000 lux (Bright Indirect Light).
  • Sunlight: Can tolerate morning sun but avoid intense midday sun.
  • Note: Stronger light requires lower temperatures. Weak light will cause the plant to become leggy and pale green.

Humidity

  • - Ideal Range: 40% - 60% relative humidity.
  • - Airflow: Unlike many carnivorous plants, Pinguicula requires excellent air circulation. Stagnant, humid air can lead to fungal infections and rot.

Substrate (Soil)

  • - Mix: A mix of peat moss and inorganic (e.g., Perlite, Pumice, or Akadama).
  • - Key Point: The soil must be well-draining, low-nutrient, and slightly acidic. Never use regular potting soil.

Watering

  • - Method: Top watering or tray method (keep a small amount of water in the saucer).
  • - Water Quality: Tap water with TDS 0-400 is generally acceptable. Rainwater or distilled water is ideal.
  • - Dormancy: Reduce watering frequency during the winter resting period; allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

 Feeding (Fertilizer)

  • - Method: Very light foliar feeding (1/8000 - 1/10000 dilution).
  • - Warning: Avoid over-fertilizing. Excess nutrients can promote algae growth and microbial infections, which are fatal to the plant.
